Syncytial giant cell hepatitis associated with chronic lymphocytic leukemia: a case report

چکیده
UNLABELLED BACKGROUND Syncytial giant cell hepatitis (GCH) is an uncommon and an underreported disease entity. In two previously reported cases of GCH in patients with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) liver failure ensued. Autoimmune and infective causes have been implicated but its etiology remains unclear. CASE PRESENTATION A 60-year-old female with CLL presented with acute hepatitis with negative viral and auto-immune serologies and without any prior toxic exposure. Liver biopsy showed typical histological features of GCH. The patient was successfully treated with corticosteroids and intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG). Her liver enzymes returned to baseline and have remained normal as of the last follow up almost 4 years later. CONCLUSIONS Association of GCH with CLL may be under recognized. Clinical suspicion of GCH in CLL patients with serology-negative hepatitis, early liver biopsy and therapeutic intervention may influence outcome. This is the first case report of successful treatment of GCH in CLL patients. Moreover, our case also demonstrates the ability to resume effective CLL therapy post-GCH diagnosis without detriment to the liver.

An Unusual Case Report: Occurrence of Renal Cell Carcinoma, Basal Cell Carcinoma and Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia in a Case of Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma Treated with Radioactive Iodine
The standard therapy for thyroid cancer is total or near total thyroidectomy, followed by the administration of radioactive iodine for remnant ablation or residual disease. Patients with radioiodine therapy are predisposed to second malignant neoplasms in organs such as central nervous system (CNS), breast, prostate, kidney, bone marrow, salivary gland, and digestive tract. Exposure to carcinog...
متن کاملA Case of Hairy Cell Leukemia Associated with Hepatitis B Surface (HBs) Antigenemia and Concurrent Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) Seropositivity
Literature review shows that hepatitis C infection may increase the risk of non-hodgkin lymphoma. Reactivation of hepatitis B infection has been reported in patients with hairy cell leukemia after chemotherapy and/or splenectomy. We present hepatitis B surface (HBs) antigenemia and concurrent hepatitis C virus (HCV) seropositivity in a case of hairy cell leukemia. Key Words: Hairy cell leukemi...

متن کاملMultiple Central Giant Cell Granuloma of the Mandible: A Case Report
Introduction: Central giant cell granuloma is a benign lesion but sometimes has aggressive proliferation composed of multinucleated giant cells in a background of spindle and ovoid mesenchymal cells. Multifocal central giant cell granuloma of jaws is very rare and usually associated with hyperparathyroidism and some syndromes. We described an un-usual case of a 22-year-old man with idi-opathic ...
